Mirror view missing from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feels like another weird Samsu

Every smartphone model has something that sets it apart, and that's even more true for foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Flip 8, for example, has a unique form factor and a cover screen experience unlike any other. In some aspects, it's a vastly different phone even from other foldables.



Mirror view is one of the Galaxy Z Flip 8's truly exclusive features that's missing even on other foldables. However, as a Galaxy Z Fold 8 owner myself, I'm beginning to wonder if this exclusivity makes sense.



In case you don't know how it works: The Galaxy Z Flip 8's Mirror view turns the cover screen into a digital mirror. And while it isn't anything revolutionary, the feature befits the form factor perfectly.



The Galaxy Z Flip 8 already has an unusual, symmetrical shape when folded, which you could say is analogous to a cosmetic compact.

But is there a reason the Galaxy Z Fold 8 — another smartphone Samsung is relentlessly marketing toward women in its video ads — doesn't have this feature? After all, one of the Fold 8's greatest qualities is its compact design.



There's no official answer as to why Mirror view is a Flip exclusive as of this writing. The only reason I can think of is that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is the only foldable that carries its primary camera system — with high-resolution sensors — on the same side as the cover screen.



Is the Flip's form factor a good enough reason to gatekeep Mirror view?



Maybe it is, but I don't think it should be. For one, Fold owners can already capture selfies with the rear-facing cameras by simply unfolding the phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra have a toggle built into the Camera app's UI just for that function.

In other words, Mirror view could have worked on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and even the Fold 8 Ultra almost as well as it does on the Galaxy Z Flip 8. Not in stand/tent mode, for obvious design reasons, but could've been good enough in other use cases.



Granted, having to unfold the Fold before turning it into a slightly oversized pocket mirror adds friction. But in a roundabout way, that could've helped highlight why Mirror view works as well as it does on the Flip by contrast.



On the one hand, I understand why Samsung is trying to give the Galaxy Z Flip 8 its own unique identity and toolset. And I get the camera-related technical reasons that might hold Mirror view back on other phones.



On the other hand, considering how heavily Samsung marketed the Fold 8 toward women in virtually every video ad, it seems like a missed opportunity to leave out Mirror view. It's a little more understandable than completely forgetting Flex Mode exists, but still, it seems like an arbitrary missed opportunity.



And if Samsung is worried about diluting Mirror view, in the grand scheme of things, I really doubt bringing it to the Fold 8 would have cannibalized Flip sales or taken anything away from the Flip series.



Samsung's almost random approach to many things is what makes some of its recent decisions feel so inconsistent. And leaving out Mirror view isn't helping the company's case.



Samsung could justify Mirror view's absence on other foldables by painting the Flip 8 as the only perfect shape for it, on account of the camera placement. And that wouldn't be too far from the truth.



But I don't think bringing Mirror view to the Fold 8, even in an imperfect manner, would have been a loss for the Flip series itself. On the contrary, it could've potentially helped popularize the feature without ruining it for the Flip.



Between Mirror view and Flex Mode both missing in action, we can only hope that future One UI updates will enhance the Fold 8 experience with features that arguably should have been included from day one.
