Samsung considers expanding 4nm capacity as HBM4 demand rises

Memory demand, particularly for high-bandwidth memory, continues to outpace supply. That's working out nicely for Samsung Electronics, which remains one of the largest players in the industry.



The company is now reportedly considering expanding its 4nm capacity to meet the increasing demand for HBM4 base dies.



Samsung has what everyone wants



Korean media is reporting that in addition to expanding 4nm capacity, Samsung is further considering an investment in a new 2nm production line to prepare for HBM5. The demand is also handing Samsung more pricing power, with the company reportedly raising prices recently for new 4nm foundry orders as well as for HBM4 base dies.



Samsung's current production line for the 4nm process is currently in full operation. In addition to being used for HBM4 base dies, Samsung's 4nm production lines are also used to manufacture chips for other clients. Given the rising demand for production on this process node, Samsung has now raised prices for new 4nm foundry orders.



As the industry prepares for a shift to the next-generation HBM5 chips, Samsung is reportedly increasing its 2nm production capacity to meet this demand. It will also provide Samsung with an opportunity to bring in more profits, as the company expects its HBM4 revenue for Q3 2026 to more than triple compared to the same period last year.
