Samsung asks court to dismiss Dua Lipa?s $15 million lawsuit

Pop star Dua Lipa filed a lawsuit against Samsung back in May this year, seeking $15 million in damages over alleged use of her image to market televisions.



Samsung has now filed its response in court. The company seeks dismissal of the lawsuit on the grounds that Dua Lipa has no case against Samsung.



Company says pop star has no case



Rolling Stone has obtained court filings made by Samsung which state that the singer has no grounds to sue because there's “nothing suggesting plaintiff endorses the televisions.”



It further adds that the images only show the TV' on-screen interface which illustrates the various applications to highlight content that's available on the TV.



The company had previously said in May that the image was provided by one of its third-party partners and that it had “explicit assurance” from the partner that image rights had been secured from the rights holder for retail boxes.



Samsung is now seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed entirely, but just because it's asked for this outcome doesn't necessary mean it'll get it. The court will ultimately decide whether there's enough merit in the lawsuit to proceed or whether it should be dismissed at the threshold.
