Galaxy Z Fold 8 could use a dual-UTG structure for crease-less foldable dis

With a foldable iPhone expected to enter the market this year, Samsung is working to eliminate one of the biggest drawbacks of foldable phones: crease visibility. According to a new report, the company is using multiple technologies, including a dual Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) structure, to achieve that goal with the Galaxy Z Fold 8.



A report from DealSite claims that Samsung Display's new foldable OLED panel places Ultra Thin Glass not only on the top layer but also at the bottom of the panel. With UTG applied on both sides, the new design reportedly reduces crease visibility by around 20 percent compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7's foldable display.








Samsung Display showcased this OLED panel at CES 2026 a couple of weeks ago. It features an optimized laminate structure, improved light dispersion, and laser-drilled micro perforations in the backplate to better distribute stress during folding.

Some reports suggest that Apple and Samsung will use different versions of Samsung Display’s near crease-less foldable OLED panel in their upcoming devices. The foldable iPhone is expected to use a glass substrate, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 may rely on a laser-drilled metal support plate to reinforce the foldable structure and minimize crease visibility.



Compared to traditional flagship phones, foldable phones face three challenges: visible display crease, relative smaller battery capacities, and limited camera hardware. Battery life and camera performance have steadily improved over the past few generations, and if reports are accurate, crease visibility could finally be addressed in a meaningful way this year.
