Google Search has a subtle new way to push you toward AI Mode

TL;DR

Google Search has added a new plus (+) icon in the search bar.
The button allows you to upload documents and images, doing which will open AI Mode.
The UI doesn’t clearly explain what the button is supposed to do.

Update, December 16, 2025 (02:11 PM ET): A Google spokesperson has reached out with the following statement:

You can now upload images or PDFs directly to the Google Search bar on desktop and ask questions about them in AI Mode. It’s another step in making it easier for you to ask anything, anywhere.
