New details about Samsung’s smart glasses emerge, US launch confirmed

Samsung stepped into the XR hardware market this year with the launch of its first headset, the Galaxy XR. The headset is only available in limited markets right now but the company will gradually expand its availability in the coming months.



It's also working on two smart glasses, with one each set to launch in 2026 and 2027. Additional details have now surfaced about the one that's likely due next year.



A variant for the US is being prepared



GalaxyClub reports that Samsung's first smart glasses carry the model number SM-O200P. The designation is different from that of the Galaxy XR, as its designation starts with SM-I.



The report mentions that these glasses feature transition lenses, meaning that they will darken under sunlight and remain clear indoors. It doesn't draw a conclusion on whether these glasses will project an augmented reality display on the lens, so it's possible that these might be the ones that are more similar to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses.



It's further claimed that these glasses will feature a camera. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which is to be expected, but the glasses won't have their own mobile data connection. Samsung is said to be preparing a version of the glasses meant for the US, which is unsurprising, since the US is also one of two launch markets for the Galaxy XR.



Earlier reports have suggested that the display-less smart glasses will be launched in 2026 while those with the heads-up AR display will arrive in 2027.



This suggests that next year's glasses will be similar in form and function to the Meta smart glasses, which let the users take photos, videos, listen to music, make calls, and receive information through an AI assistant.



Given Samsung's deep integration of Gemini AI on its products, it's within the realm of possibility that Gemini will play an integral role in delivering AI features on the glasses.



No word as yet on when these glasses will be launched next year and how much they'll cost. Meta's latest glasses start at $379 so Samsung's offering will likely be within that price range.
