Old Galaxy S22 remains the compact, pocketable king of this generation

I'm not sure everyone will agree, but the way I see it, Samsung's current generation of Galaxy S phones began in early 2020 with the launch of the Galaxy S20 series. And some of the principles established by the S20 lineup have remained relevant to this day.



Before the S20, we had the Galaxy S10 family with a different design language, no Ultra model, and a different naming convention. Then, a year later, Samsung jumped from 10 straight to 20, and with the launch of the Galaxy S20 series, it laid down the foundation of what we have today.



But while I'm reminiscing this bit of Samsung history, the point of this exercise was to shine some light not on the S20 but on the Galaxy S22 which, to me, is iconic.



Here is the simple reason why the base Galaxy S22 still holds a special place in my Samsung hall of fame. It's still the most compact Galaxy S model of the 2020+ generation.



That's right. Beginning with the Galaxy S20 and counting up to the ongoing S25, the one phone that has remained the most compact is the Galaxy S22. It beats every other Galaxy S released over the past five years.



Granted, the Galaxy S22 is not the thinnest in the series so far, nor is it the narrowest, but it is the shortest and has the smallest footprint overall. It measures 146 x 70.6 x 7.6mm. And even if the Galaxy S23 had the same dimensions, I still have to give it up for the S22 model because of its slightly curved frame.



Combining the curved frame with the smallest footprint of this generation means that the Galaxy S22 is still the most pocketable and easy to use with one hand, even today. At least I think so. I mean, you can't argue with it having the smallest footprint, but you might prefer a different frame design.








I will admit that I love the advantages of the flat frame in later models. I like that my S24 can stand on a table, upright or on its side, without stumbling over. The flat frame looks good and can sometimes act like a kickstand for remote photos or videos.



But I can't deny the charm of the Galaxy S22's compactness and pocketability. If you ask me, it hasn't been beaten yet.



Funnily enough, chances are that nothing will beat the S22 next year either. Leaks say that the upcoming Galaxy S26 won't do any better. The S26 may retain a flat frame and have a larger 149.4 x 71.5mm footprint.



All in all, if you're still rocking the 6.1-inch Galaxy S22 and you appreciate the compact form factor and its curved frame, enjoy the phone while you can. The base model from 2022 reigns supreme.
