Meta just showed Samsung what Galaxy Glasses don?t need to become

Meta, the company that runs Facebook, Instagram, etc, is making waves since yesterday after it unveiled the new Meta VR Glasses. They're a significant improvement over competing products available in the market right now.



This feat of engineering deserves appreciation. The glasses feature a 5K micro-OLED display and provide an immersive private cinema, sports, gaming, and multi-screen workspace experience. All of this without the helmet-style appearance of similar products like Apple's Vision Pro or Samsung's Galaxy XR.



The Meta VR Glasses are truly portable and will be very comfortable to wear, since they only weigh about 100g. That's largely because all of the computing, battery, and storage components have been offloaded into a separate puck that you can easily carry inside a pocket or a bag. All of this can be yours for $1,299.



This is an impressive demonstration of just how far immersive computing can be pushed into something that looks vaguely like a pair of smart glasses, not too different from Samsun'g upcoming glasses. However, this is probably the wrong product for Samsung to chase with Galaxy Glasses.



The Galaxy XR has been Samsung's only contender in the extended reality, spatial computing segment so far. It's mostly forgot about the device since it was launched. There have been no major software or app support announcements. It's also not known if and when Samsung intends to upgrade the headset.

Samsung has spent much of 2026 polishing an entirely different idea altogether. Its first smart glasses, developed with Google, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, are designed as an everyday companion to the Galaxy phone.



They have no built-in display, instead relying on a camera, microphones, speakers and Gemini-powered AI to understand the user's surroundings and provide assistance without requiring the phone to be pulled from a pocket.



The company says the glasses are intended for everyday routines, work, travel and hands-free experiences. This formula will be carried over to Samsung's own-brand Galaxy Glasses when they're launched.



Samsung has another pair of display-equipped smart glasses in the works, but they're of the augmented reality kind, not one that puts a giant private computing environment in front of your eyes.



And honestly, Samsung should stick with that idea. As fascinating as Meta's new VR glasses are, they're fundamentally solving a different problem. The use cases are different, and as this isn't meant to be a barely noticeable pair of prescription glasses, any answer to Meta's latest attempt must come through the Galaxy XR line and not through Glasses.



Samsung doesn't need its Galaxy Glasses to become a miniature version of Meta VR Glasses. On the contrary, doing so could destroy what makes the concept interesting in the first place. Its glasses don't need to become another screen simply because they can.



The real promise of smart glasses isn't necessarily more screen time. It can actually be less screen time, fewer instances of you needing to pull out your phone during the day and then unintentionally losing precious minutes and hours doing mindless scrolling.



Samsung can really dial this in with the rumored AR smart glasses it's working on. They will be able to show crucial information such as notifications, directions, texts, and more within the user's line of sight. The company is expected to launch these glasses at some point next year.



Hopefully, after looking at Meta's new VR Glasses, Samsung resists the urge to overdo it with this product. It shouldn't arrive at the conclusion that these glasses need to deliver immersive 3D experience.



The only conclusion it should arrive at is that even on display-equipped devices, the display can remain incredibly small while being incredibly useful within release.



Meta's approach to headsets and glasses is quite different. It's not a conventional hardware company like Samsung is. Immersive platforms and social experiences are the company's bread and butter.



Its new VR Glasses are the logical continuation of that strategy. Meta is effectively trying to make the VR headset disappear by turning it into something that looks like glasses.



While Meta may have just shown us what the future of VR looks like when the headset becomes a pair of glasses, Samsung doesn't need to answer by making its glasses another headset. What it should continue to focus on is to make them into a device you forget you're wearing, until the exact moment you need it.
