How has the battery powering the Galaxy S Ultra series evolved over the years? “Not so much,” or maybe “not at all,” might be the most accurate answer. Thankfully, according to the latest rumors, things are about to change forever for the Galaxy S Ultra lineup.



2027 might be the year when the series finally leaves every old and lingering battery spec behind in favor of newer, better technologies. To understand that better, here's a quick recap that should highlight why a battery upgrade seems like such a huge deal for the Galaxy S Ultra.



Which Galaxy S Ultra model has had the biggest battery so far?



If you're new to the world of Samsung, and especially its mobile devices, don't worry about getting the right answer. To be honest, it's a trick question.



The harsh reality is that Samsung's Galaxy S Ultra phones have always had the same battery capacity. Ever since the original Galaxy S20 Ultra took the reins from the Galaxy Note in 2020, the series has used a 5,000mAh battery year over year. It still does.



This is one of the reason why long-time Samsung fans were beginning to feel like the Galaxy S Ultra series was getting too stagnant. Thankfully, things are already moving in a new direction.



Battery life and charging speeds improved



There's a clear distinction between a battery's capacity and a phone's durability on a full charge. Countless factors unrelated to the battery itself determine energy efficiency and consumption. Components get more power-efficient, and power management systems do, too.



In other words, although every Galaxy S Ultra model released since 2020 has had a 5,000mAh battery, newer models achieve better battery life thanks to hardware advancements in other areas and better software. For one, newer chips are manufactured on finer processes, making them both more powerful and efficient.



The charging situation is a little different. Since 2020, Galaxy S Ultra charging speeds have changed three times. One time for the worse, one time to repair the damage, and once for the better.



Thankfully, we're now experiencing the better part. But in 2021, for reasons that have remained unclear to this day, the Galaxy S21 Ultra downgraded the wired charging speed from 45W to 25W. Samsung thankfully came to its senses a year later and reintroduced 45W charging for the S22 Ultra. That lasted until this year.



The most recent change Samsung made to the series' battery charging speeds was, thankfully, for the better. The Galaxy S26 Ultra, released in early 2026, was the first to improve both wired and wireless charging.



The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery — same as always — but boasts 60W wired and 25W wireless charging.



Galaxy S27 Ultra: Things are about to evolve once again



Samsung increased charging speeds for the Galaxy S Ultra series this year, but next year, the series should benefit from even more upgrades.



The latest data from unofficial sources and regulatory agencies suggests that other battery-related aspects will improve significantly with the launch of the Galaxy S27 Ultra next year.



First, the Galaxy S27 Ultra may have a larger 5,700 mAh battery. For the first time since the series' conception, the battery may finally be able to store more energy.



Second, evidence also points to Samsung planning to bring Silicon-Carbon (Si-C) batteries from foldables to rigid phones. The Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to become Samsung's first non-foldable device equipped with a Si-C battery.

In terms of battery tech, the Galaxy S Ultra series has had a bit of a rough journey up until this year. Batteries have had the same capacity for years, and still do, but 2027 might mark a highly anticipated and most-wanted change.
